When does the Medalist movie release?

The Medalist movie opens in Japanese theaters on Friday, February 19, 2027. The official August 30 announcement supplied the date, following the earlier announcement of a film continuation. This is a Japanese theatrical opening; an overseas cinema date or home-streaming launch requires a separate release announcement.

The film continues the figure-skating anime following its television installments. For viewers assembling a watchlist, it belongs after the TV story rather than alongside unrelated standalone anime movies. Its promotional material places Inori and her coach at the next major competitive stage.

February 19 is an exact date, so it can appear in our anime release calendar as a confirmed Japanese cinema release. Keep that scope in mind if you are planning to watch from another country: the date tells you when the Japanese theatrical run begins. What is Medalist about?

Medalist begins with Inori Yuitsuka, a girl determined to become a figure skater despite being considered late to start. Kodansha's first-volume introduction places her at eleven and describes the skepticism surrounding her ambition. Her family's experience with her older sister's unsuccessful dream complicates that desire.

Tsukasa Akeuraji has his own history of disappointment in skating. When he becomes Inori's coach, their partnership connects two people who see a possibility that others have been quick to dismiss. The original premise gives the competitive story an emotional foundation before medals or rankings enter the picture.

That relationship makes the series approachable beyond an audience already familiar with figure skating. Inori has to develop technical skill while learning to trust herself; Tsukasa must turn his understanding of the sport into guidance another person can use. Watching their collaboration is part of the appeal, alongside the performances on the ice. Related reading: THE ONE PIECE Release Date: February 2027, Episodes & Where to Watch.

Which competition does the movie cover?

The official film introduction places Inori and Tsukasa at the All-Japan Novice Championship after earning their place through the Chubu block competition. The next major confrontation brings Inori into direct competition with Hikaru Kamisaki, whose coach is Jun Yodaka.

That announced setup gives the movie a clear point of focus: the young skaters are moving into a more demanding event, and the rivalry now has an immediate competitive setting. It is enough to understand the stakes without revealing how the event ends or importing later manga developments into the film synopsis. Related reading: Aikatsu Stars! The promotional story also raises the difficulty of Inori's training. Viewers who prefer to avoid detailed performance spoilers can stop at the championship premise and use the teaser for a visual introduction. This guide does not assign an unannounced chapter range, final runtime or ending to the movie.

Watch the official teaser

The August 30 release-date update includes a newer promotional teaser carrying the February opening information. It follows the initial film-announcement teaser and belongs to the movie campaign. The dated promotional artwork above provides the same Japanese opening date. Both announcements are useful for distinguishing the new theatrical continuation from television reruns.

Production background and returning performers

The official movie credits list Yasutaka Yamamoto as director, Jukki Hanada as screenwriter and Chinatsu Kameyama for character design and chief animation direction. ENGI produces the animation, with music by Yuki Hayashi. ANIMEC is credited as the Japanese distributor.

Skating-specific credits include choreography by Akiko Suzuki and skating direction and 3DCG direction by Koji. These roles are useful context for an adaptation whose dramatic peaks depend on movement: viewers need to understand a performance while also following the person attempting it. The principal Japanese cast includes Natsumi Haruse as Inori, Takeo Otsuka as Tsukasa, Kana Ichinose as Hikaru and Yuma Uchida as Jun. The official film project and its event coverage connect those central performers to the continuation. An English dub cast, if announced later, would be a separate set of credits.

How to catch up before February

Begin with the television anime's first and second seasons, then move to the movie. That order introduces Inori's starting point, her partnership with Tsukasa and the competitive relationships the championship story builds upon. A viewer interested primarily in the film will still benefit from seeing why this event matters to them.

The official August update announced Japanese reruns of both television seasons, beginning October 1 on TOKYO MX and October 3 in BS Asahi's late-night schedule. Those broadcasts offer a domestic catch-up route. They are television reruns, with their own schedule, rather than a change to the February movie date.

Outside Japan, check the season labels and local catalog in your streaming service. Availability of the television anime is useful for preparation but does not establish that the same service will receive the film on its theatrical opening day. Can you read the manga first?

TSURUMAIKADA created the manga, published by Kodansha in Japan and available in English from Kodansha USA. The opening volume provides the original introduction to Inori and Tsukasa. Starting there lets new readers experience their partnership developing rather than entering at an assumed movie chapter.

The manga and anime are different release schedules, so a publisher's latest-volume synopsis should not be treated as the movie's announced plot. For another story about ambition, training and performance, see our Akane-banashi Season 2 guide, which covers its January 2027 return.
