What is Naruto: Shadow Rising?

During the “NARUTO: What's Next?” panel at New York Comic Con on October 10, 2026, the franchise announced a new Naruto manga drawn by original creator Masashi Kishimoto. The reveal appeared at the end of a special promotional video, and the official announcement graphic carries the Shadow Rising name. This is a manga announcement, not a new anime season or a confirmed adaptation of the manga.

The announcement is notable because Kishimoto created and illustrated the original Naruto manga. The sequel series Boruto has involved a different core art team, making a newly drawn Naruto story from Kishimoto himself a distinct development for the franchise.

What does the official teaser show?

The teaser opens with the stone faces of six former Hokage overlooking the Hidden Leaf Village and a seventh monument under construction. It then shows Naruto holding a Hokage hat, Kakashi smiling, Sasuke standing alone, Sakura gazing at a baby, and a confrontation between Naruto and Sasuke. These are images from the teaser, not a complete plot synopsis.

When will Shadow Rising be released?

No precise serialization start date or publication schedule has been announced in the franchise's official October 11 recap. Some news outlets have discussed a 2027 release, but the official announcement directs readers to the Naruto Jump Super Stage at Jump Festa 2027, held December 19–20, 2026, for additional information. Until a publisher confirms a schedule, a month or day would be premature.

Where does the story fit in the Naruto timeline?

The teaser's images have prompted speculation about a story set between the end of the original manga and the era depicted in Boruto. The unfinished Seventh Hokage monument and Sakura's scene with a baby offer clues, but the production has not published a confirmed timeline or full plot summary. Fans should distinguish these visual hints from official story details.

Is Shadow Rising the same as Naruto × Ninkū?

No. The New York Comic Con panel announced two separate projects. Shadow Rising is a new Naruto manga drawn by Kishimoto, whereas Naruto × Ninkū is a four-episode crossover anime supervised by Kishimoto and Ninkū creator Koji Kiriyama. See our Naruto × Ninkū announcement guide for the crossover's teaser and staff.

What remains to be announced?

Readers are still waiting for the manga's official publication date, magazine or distribution details, chapter count, complete story premise and English-language availability. We will update this report when Shueisha or the official Naruto franchise confirms those specifics.
